New CCTV footage has been released of two potential witnesses to an assault on a pensioner who later died.

Melvyn Hargreaves, 71, was attacked in Derby shortly after midnight on 2 January.

Officers, who previously released CCTV stills, have now released a video of a man and a woman who might have seen the alleged attacker.

A 22-year-old man has appeared in court charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Mr Hargreaves, of Rosengrave Street, Derby, died in hospital from head injuries several days after he was assaulted at the junction of Gerard Street and Mercian Way.

The new CCTV footage shows a man and woman walking from the St Peter's Street end of Babington Lane to the corner of Gower Street, at about 00:35 GMT on 2 January.

They are thought to have then turned onto Gower Street and later onto Green Lane.

Stills were released previously but detectives said they hoped the new video would help the couple identify themselves.

Samuel Watt, 22, of Forman Street, Derby, is next due before the city's crown court on 13 March.
