A paraglider has died after falling 150ft (46m) near cliffs in Devon.

The alarm was raised when a leisure boater saw the man fall to the ground close to a golf course at Staddon Heights, near Plymouth.

Coastguard teams, plus a land and air ambulance, were called after the local middle-aged man fell at about 1740 BST on Saturday. He died at the scene.

Police said they had started an investigation, but added that the death was not thought to be suspicious.

Coastguards said there had been good visibility in the area and that the weather included westerly winds which were force four or five (16 to 20mph), increasing to force five or six (20 to 27mph) later.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said the man had been "beyond assistance" when he was found.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers had been at the scene and were in the process of investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Air Accident Investigation Board was also assisting, the force added.
