Devon by-election sees success for Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats have beaten the Conservatives in a Devon by-election.

Voter turn out was 59% for the Ipplepen seat on Teignbridge District Council and the result saw a swing of 34% for the Liberal Democrats.

Alistair Dewhirst won the seat, resulting in the council now consisting of 21 Liberal Democrats, 18 Conservatives and seven independents.

The by-election followed the death of Conservative councillor Vic Elliott, 87, in a tractor accident on his farm.
