Bishopsteighton man, 71, jailed for child abuse

A 71-year-old man has been jailed for sexually abusing children over a period of nearly 40 years.

James Whittaker, of Stone Lodge, Bishopsteignton, Devon, pleaded guilty at Exeter Crown Court to 13 serious sexual offences against four children.

Whittaker told police he knew his crimes, which took place between the 1970s and 2008, were wrong and were carried out for sexual gratification.

He was jailed for eight years by Judge Paul Darlow.

Whittaker, a married man with no previous convictions, was a former Teignmouth river pilot and had worked as a navigational officer in the international shipping world.
