The Tories took control of 19 seats out of the 31, with the Liberal Democrats losing five of its eight seats.

The result means the council now has 19 Conservatives, nine councillors on other parties and three Liberal Democrats.

Since 1999, no political party has gained overall control of West Devon.

The borough council had 12 Conservative candidates, eight Liberal Democrats, 10 Independents and one Independent Conservative.

Labour was fielding 10 candidates when they fielded none during the last elections in 2007.
