North Devon housing advice queries up 30%

The number of people in a Devon district asking for housing advice has risen by 30% in a year, a council said.

Nearly 200 people called North Devon District Council's housing helpline in April, compared to 150 in the same month in 2010.

The authority said that the rise in enquiries could be down to the economic downturn.

It added that national changes to housing benefits coming into force may have also had an effect.

Some of the benefits changes, announced in the emergency Budget last year and the autumn spending review, came into effect on 1 April.

They included new policies determining how housing benefit was allocated.
