Funding secured for Devon village flood defences

Funding has been secured for flood defences to protect a Devon village.

The Environment Agency has given £150,000 to protect Teigngrace near Newton Abbot.

Teignbridge District Council said historically the village had suffered from flooding and was at risk from the Ventiford Brook.

Councillor Joan Lambert told BBC News the plans for the defences were being finalised. The authority said work could begin in the next few months.

Councillor Kevin Lake said: "We have worked closely with residents and the Parish Council to bring this flood management project which has been a key priority for the area to fruition.

"Over the coming weeks the final design for the scheme will be produced and necessary approvals sought to ensure the scheme delivers the highest level of flood protection for the village."

Councillor Joan Lambert said: "This work is long overdue.

"Anything that will reduce the flooding on this site is welcomed, to bring peace of mind to the residents."
