Building work has begun to replace a Plymouth public library building destroyed by fire.

Plympton library lost its entire stock of about 25,000 books in the blaze in 2008 as well as some "irreplaceable" historic pamphlets and photos.

The new library is being built on the same site on the Ridgeway at a cost of about £760,000.

It will be 50% bigger than its predecessor and is set to open in February 2012.

The old library building opened in 1964 and was made largely of wood.

The cause of the fire was never established.
