Roadworks have begun to upgrade a junction of a major road in Devon ahead of the construction of a new town.

Lane closures are in place on the A30, as part of work to upgrade junction 29.

The work is being done in preparation for the new town of Cranbrook, where building is due to begin shortly.

This initial phase of roadworks is expected to be completed by September, a link road is also being built to the new Exeter Science Park.

The major development programme east of Exeter, known as the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point, also includes the Exeter Gateway, a terminal for rail and road freight.

Exeter Skypark, a business park, is also being built.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council's cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, said: "The junction 29 improvements are essential to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to support the growth to the east of Exeter, which is vital to our economy.

"Every effort is being made to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum."
