Driver arrested for attempted murder in Newton Abbot

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pedestrian was injured on a road in Devon.

Police were called to Keyberry Road, Newton Abbot, where a Vauxhall van had struck a man.

Witnesses at the scene said the driver drove at the man, then got out of his vehicle and assaulted him.

The arrested man, aged 24, was also held on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The 47-year-old pedestrian from Paignton was taken Torbay Hospital to be treated for facial lacerations and a suspected fractured hand.

The arrested man, from Newton Abbot, was taken to Torquay custody centre to be questioned after the incident at about 0715 BST, police said.

The road was closed until 1300 BST for a police investigation.
