Sixty moved as car hits gas pipe in Torquay

Up to 60 people were evacuated from a Devon street after a car crashed into a mains gas pipe.

The incident happened at about 2100 BST on Thursday in Abbey Road, Torquay.

Police moved people to the Ashleigh Court Hotel for about two hours while the incident was dealt with.

The driver, a 28-year-old man from Torquay was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and remains in custody. No-one was injured.

Police said the gas mains pipe was attached to a wall and the black BMW vehicle crashed into it.
