Five beach huts in the holiday resort of Paignton in Devon have been destroyed in a fire.

A further four of the multi-coloured single-storey beach huts, on Marine Drive, Preston, were damaged.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the alarm was raised just before 05:00 BST.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were investigating whether the fire was started deliberately.

Torbay Council confirmed it knew of damage to the huts, including four overlooking the sea.

It added: "Private owners and tenants are being contacted to inform them of the damage.

"We are also working closely with the police investigation into the cause of the fire."
