A man has been charged with criminal damage after graffiti was written on a war memorial in Plymouth.

A 47-year-old man from the Stoke area of the city has been arrested and charged with criminal damage after the word "anarchy" was written on the base of the memorial on Plymouth Hoe.

Officers said the incident happened at about 21:00 BST on Wednesday.

Thousands of people had lined the seafront to watch the 15th annual British Firework Championships.

The man is expected to appear at Plymouth Magistrates' Court on 31 August.
