The death of a motorcyclist in Plymouth has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Devon and Cornwall Police say.

The rider, who was in his 40s, crashed into a wall on Mannamead Road, at the junction with Seymour Road, at about 04:15 BST on Sunday.

He was taken to the city's Derriford Hospital where he later died.

Police said they had been attempting to stop the biker, but were not in pursuit at the time of the crash.

Two officers in a patrol vehicle saw the motorcycle and decided to stop and check the vehicle and rider because of the manner in which it was being ridden, police said.

The officers lost sight of the bike and then came across it after the crash.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Although this incident in no way constitutes a police pursuit, the force has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission who will monitor the investigation."

The road was closed for several hours after the crash for an investigation.
