Barnstaple burglar jailed for £40 piggy bank raid

A burglar who raided a child's piggy bank and stole £40 has been jailed.

David Flay used a ladder to climb into an upstairs room at the house in Barnstaple, Devon, in the early morning raid on 8 June.

When confronted by the house owner, Flay, 25, of Barnstaple, took the children's money in £1 coins from the piggy bank and fled.

Flay pleaded guilty to burglary at Exeter Crown Court and was jailed for 30 months.

The court was told the house owner feared for the safety of her three children and herself and pleaded with Flay not to hurt them.

Judge Philip Wassal said Flay was in the victim's home for 13 minutes "but it must have seemed like an eternity".
