North Devon Council's early tax deduction hits 23,000

About 23,000 people living in North Devon have had their council tax taken out of their bank accounts a day early.

North Devon District Council said it was an "administrative error" which caused £3.1m to be taken from accounts.

The authority said it would reimburse anyone who had experienced bank charges because of the mistake.

The council said it "apologises for the error and any inconvenience caused". The deduction should have taken place on 1 September.
