'Rising costs' close motor museum in Colyford, Devon

A motor museum housed in an old filling station in Devon has closed after a rise in running costs.

The museum, Motoring Memories, in Colyford, contained vehicles, pumps and motoring artefacts from the 1900s.

Curator Robin Barnard said the costs, overheads and the time it took to run the museum had forced him to close the facility.

He said hoped a buyer could be found for the collection. If not, the items will be sold at auction in 2012.

Mr Barnard said the collection had started as a hobby in the 1960s.

"It's been almost a lifetime that I've been collecting. It's a sad time that it's going to have to end."

Mr Barnard said he had started the collection after he felt items such as petrol pumps and signs were not being saved.

"It became an obsession really - it's been 40 years now."

The museum opened in Colyford in 2003 and the artefacts were previously on show in Sidmouth.
