Devon unemployment reaches 20,000

More than 20,000 people in Devon are out of work and claiming benefits, according to new figures from the Office of National Statistics.

The county, including the Plymouth and Torbay unitary areas, saw an increase from 19,930 in November 2011 to 20,208 in December, a rise of 278.

The breakdown was 10,104 people in the Devon county area, plus 6,396 in Plymouth and 3,618 in Torbay.

Across the UK, unemployment is at 2.685m, the highest since summer 1994.
