Fatal crash closes A38 Parkway causing traffic gridlock

A fatal accident has caused major disruption and delays for drivers travelling from Cornwall into Devon.

The crash, involving a motorcyclist and a van, happened on the A38 Parkway in Plymouth at about 07:00 GMT.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the motorcyclist - a man in his 40s - died following the crash.

During the rush hour, traffic was queuing from Saltash in Cornwall over the Tamar Bridge into Devon. The road will remain closed for some time.

The accident also resulted in major delays on the Torpoint Ferry as drivers attempted to avoid the gridlock on the roads.

Tamar Crossings, which runs both the bridge and the ferry, said its third ferry - which normally operates during the rush hour - would remain in service until the backlog was cleared. There is currently at least a 45-minute wait.

Anyone who witnessed the crash between Weston Mill and Crownhill has been asked to contact police.
