Clyst St Mary barn fire kills 250 pigs

About 250 pigs have died in a barn fire in east Devon.

The sows and piglets were in a 20m by 15m (66ft by 49ft) single-storey barn on a farm at Clyst St Mary, near Exeter.

Fire crews were called at about 04:00 GMT, but the barn had been so badly burned the animals could not be saved, Devon and Somerset Fire Service said.

The barn was allowed to burn out. An investigation was to be carried out, the fire service said.
