Animals at a farm in Devon were lucky not to have been harmed when a blaze broke out in a barn, firefighters say.

About 50 firefighters were called to the barn on Forder Valley Road, in the Leigham area of Plymouth, at about 17:00 GMT on Friday.

Crews stayed overnight at the building, which contained hay, straw and fertiliser, the fire service said.

An investigation was to be started into its cause, it added.

Incident Commander Dale Durante, of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We've been very fortunate that we've been able to stop the spread of the fire.

"The livestock is safe and well, and we've also been able to protect them from the effects of smoke."
