The councillor in charge of education services in Devon has been charged with drinking and driving.

Christine Channon was breathalysed after a minor road traffic accident in Budleigh Salterton on 25 February, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Mrs Channon, who is a Conservative councillor and a former leader of Devon County Council, has not been available for comment.

She is due to appear before Exeter Magistrates' Court on 13 March.

The council said it would not comment on reports that Mrs Channon had resigned from her position in the cabinet as portfolio holder for schools and learning.
