A record-breaking £1m has been raised by the Poppy Appeal in Devon, it has been announced.

Carole Arnold, community fundraiser, said it was the first time the appeal had broken the £1m barrier.

In 2008, it raised £600,000, and £975,000, in 2010/2011. The appeal raises funds for the armed forces charity, The Royal British Legion.

"We are especially proud here in Devon to have reached this milestone," a spokesperson said.

"Our county is large, but very rural, so to achieve such a figure, takes an enormous amount of commitment from our volunteers."

The money provides support to war veterans and their families, and awards grants to organisations that provide specialist services to veterans.
