A deal has been signed to redevelop the site of a derelict 19th Century hotel building on Torquay's seafront which was destroyed in a fire.

The £12m project will see the Palm Court Hotel site become restaurants, holiday apartments and flats.

The building, originally constructed in 1848, had been empty for a number of years before the fire last December.

Torbay's Conservative mayor Graham Oliver said the project would improve Torquay.

He said: "l think we need to tidy up our shop window, and this is a major part of the shop window."
