Newton Abbot sub-station fire cuts power to thousands

A fire at an electricity sub-station cut the power to thousands of households in Devon.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said crews were called to the facility at Newton Abbot just before 11:00 BST.

Western Power Distribution confirmed there had been a high-voltage failure affecting nearly 20,000 customers in the Torquay and Newton Abbot area.

It also sparked a number of lift rescues in both towns, and affected traffic lights.

The fire service said crews rescued a total of six people from three lifts in Newton Abbot and one in Torquay, all of whom were trapped after the power outage. No-one was injured.

Western Power said electrical engineers had now restored power to all customers.
