A man from Kent has been sentenced after starting a fire at a north Devon hotel.

Anthony Westhead, 65, of Holywell Avenue, Folkstone, was given a hospital order with no time limit at Exeter Crown Court.

More than 50 guests fled the building after the fire broke out at Tantons Hotel, in Bideford, in May 2011.

Westhead admitted arson at an earlier hearing but was not found guilty of arson with intent to endanger life.

Sixty firefighters and 11 fire engines were used to tackle the blaze, which was in a single room on the top floor.
