About 20 people were evacuated from an industrial estate in Teignmouth because of a gas leak and fire.

Devon and Cornwall Police set up a 100m (328ft) cordon around the site at Broadmeadow Industrial Estate.

Emergency services were called after contractors building a new supermarket spotted a flame coming from a pipe in a trench at about 09:25 GMT.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said there was no risk of an explosion.

A police spokesman said Bishopsteignton Road had been closed and two fire engines had attended the scene.

Group manager Robbie Woods said: "As a precautionary measure the road has been closed which is causing traffic chaos in the area."

He added that the flame was about 6in (15cm) high and up to 36in (91cm) long.

Mr Woods said the cause of the gas leak and the flame was currently being investigated.

Gas and electrical contractors also attended the scene.
