A fire has broken out at a thatched cottage in Devon.

Up to 80 firefighters were called to Downwater Cottages, at Horns Cross, near Bideford, at about 04:00 GMT where they discovered the thatch roof was well alight.

At its height, 15 crews were at the scene, the fire service said. That was later scaled back to 10.

Power engineers were also called to to isolate electrics to the property. The nearby A39 has been closed.

One woman inside the property managed to escape uninjured.

Firefighters battled to stop the flames spreading to the neighbouring buildings, and were able to bring the blaze under control.
