Ice lollies for Devon hospital patients during heatwave

Ice lollies and chilled bottles of water are being offered to all patients at a Devon hospital as the heatwave continues.

Patients at North Devon District Hospital, in Barnstaple, will be offered an ice lolly once a day and chilled bottles of water twice a day until Monday.

The refreshments are being paid for by the hospital trust.

A spokeswoman said it would cost a "very small amount".

'More bearable'

The trust added it was not coming from money allocated for patient care.

"The heat has been unprecedented and hospitals are always warm even in winter, so this will make the experience more bearable for patients," the spokeswoman said.

On Saturday, the Met Office reduced its heatwave warning levels for the South West from level three to level two.

The UK is currently in its first prolonged heatwave since 2006, with temperatures above 30C recorded somewhere in the country on each of the past six days.
