Bungling thieves set fire to a cash machine when they attempted to break in using a cutting torch.

The attempted theft happened at Carew Services on the A38 near South Brent in Devon at 03:00 GMT.

It is not known if there was money in the machine at the service station, which is closed for repairs. The ATM was severely damaged by the fire.

Police are hunting two men seen wearing hoodies fleeing the scene, said a Devon and Cornwall force spokesman.

He said: "This is a fairly rare type of incident and a number of lines of inquiry are being followed.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who may have driven past around the time of the incident and saw anything suspicious."
