A man dialled 999 because he had run out of toilet roll, police have revealed.

Devon and Cornwall Police said other people had called the emergency number asking how to cook a frozen turkey and which shops were open on Christmas Day.

The calls were among over 200,000 received by the force last year.

Ch Supt Jim Nye said as so many emergency calls were made, it was important "only appropriate phone calls come in".

A force spokesman said hoax callers can be traced and could receive heavy fines or a prison sentence.
