Newquay rape attack suspects arrested

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked in Newquay, police said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the victim, in her 20s, was assaulted while walking alone at about 02:00 BST on Tuesday in the Gannel area of the town.

The victim, who also suffered a head injury, was later taken to hospital.

A 44-year-old man was questioned and has since been released on police bail. The other suspect, aged 30, remains in custody.

Police said officers "responded very quickly" to the assault.

Newquay neighbourhood team leader Sgt James Honeywill said: "We would like to reassure the public that this type of incident is extremely rare in Cornwall and that Newquay remains a safe place to live, work and visit."
