Boy kept prisoner' in bedroom by Paignton parents

A Devon couple admitted child cruelty after being accused of keeping their young son a "prisoner in his bedroom".

The boy, now aged 11, was locked in his bedroom for "long periods of time" with just a bucket to relieve himself, Exeter Crown Court heard.

The couple from Paignton, aged 50 and 38, admitted causing him unnecessary suffering between 2007 and 2012.

The alarm was raised when, the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told a teacher.

Locked out

Neighbours and other family members also had "concerns" about the boy.

Prosecutor Philip Sewell said the boy was also locked out of the house for long periods without being suitably dressed and was taken in by other people.

He said: "He was out in light clothing in the rain."

The couple will be sentenced at Exeter Crown Court in October.
