New £12m police station to open in Bournemouth

A £12m new police station, designed to house almost double the number of people in custody, is due to open in Dorset.

Bournemouth's new Madeira Road station will open its doors at 0700 GMT on Wednesday.

The new structure has 34 cells compared with 18 in the old police station.

Ch Supt Gill Donnell, of Dorset police, said the new facility provided "a much safer environment" to hold people that we bring in custody.

It will remain open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
