Morrisons supermarket to buy Verwood leisure centre

A Dorset leisure centre could become part of a neighbouring supermarket if councillors approve its sale.

Supermarket chain Morrisons wants to buy Verwood Leisure Centre to expand its store in Chilton Drive, Verwood.

East Dorset District Council says the plan would allow it to "improve the town's leisure provision by relocating them to other venues".

The authority has proposed moving some of the facilities to a nearby school and community centre.

As well as expanding its existing store, Morrisons wants to open a petrol station on the site.

Council leader Spencer Flower said: "The sale of the leisure centre is a win-win for the residents of Verwood and East Dorset."

The plan goes to the council's policy and resources committee on Wednesday.
