Boat's skipper severs two fingers along Dorset coast

A skipper had to be airlifted from his fishing boat off the Dorset coast after partially severing two of his fingers.

The 34-year-old broadcast a pan-pan message shortly after noon from his vessel Purbeck Isle, seven nautical miles off Portland Bill lighthouse.

Coastguards described the casualty as "very calm and collected". It is believed he may have injured himself on a winch on board the vessel.

He was taken to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester by helicopter.
