Online rumours of child abductions dismissed

Rumours of attempted child abductions in Dorset and Hampshire have been dismissed by police.

Dorset Police described an incident involving a man offering a 12-year-old boy a lift in Alderholt as a "genuine misunderstanding".

They said rumours about unconnected incidents in Hampshire subsequently spread on social networking websites.

Insp Mike Darkin said: "Unverified reports have caused unwarranted, but understandable, alarm among parents."
