London 2012: Torch celebration villages offered grants

A Dorset council is offering £5,000 to local communities to help them celebrate the Olympic torch relay.

Grants are only available for the 11 town and parish councils in West Dorset which will welcome the torch on the 12 and 13 July next year.

These include: Dorchester, Bridport, Lyme Regis and Abbotsbury.

Town councils can apply for up to £550, while parish councils can apply for up to £400. The money must be spent on supporting community celebrations.

The funding is also available to town and parish councils in Puddletown, Winterbourne Abbas, Chideock, Burton Bradstock, Portesham, Chickerell and Osmington.

Robert Gould, from West Dorset District Council, said: "The district council is happy to be able to support this once in a lifetime celebration."

The Olympic torch 70-day tour around the UK will take in more than 1,000 different locations, including 47 in Dorset covering 38 towns and villages.

On 11 July next year the torch will travel from Salisbury, Wiltshire to Weymouth and Portland, which will host the Olympic sailing events.

It will arrive in Bournemouth on 13 July 2012.

The torch will head to the New Forest when it leaves Bournemouth on 14 July next year.
