Dorset council buys gritters in preparation for snow

Two new gritters, 1,300 tonnes of road salt and extra grit bins have been bought by a Dorset council after the worst winter for a century last year.

Poole Borough Council said it was "prepared" for cold weather and will have a fleet of five gritters on 24-hour standby throughout the winter.

The borough said neighbouring authorities could supply it with further salt if required.

The council also plans to use social media sites during severe weather.

If the area experiences disruption due to heavy snow or ice, Poole Borough Council will be putting out alerts on its severe weather website, Twitter feed and Facebook pages to let the public know of any services affected.
