Dorset launches new heater loan scheme ahead of winter

A Dorset scheme that loans out heaters to people in need has been launched.

Oil-filled radiators are available free of charge to those who have a sudden loss of domestic heating or who need additional warmth.

The 20 heaters will be only loaned out via a referral from an official body.

Sue Warr, from Dorset County Council, said the scheme would "help to prevent people suffering the effects of really cold weather, such as hypothermia".

Loans can be between five days and two weeks but longer periods can be negotiated.

The scheme is being funded by the Dorset Community Foundation.

Those eligible for additional heating include people with a diagnosed health condition or mothers who need extra warmth for newborn babies.

Ms Warr said: "In some instances it will support hospital discharge and prevent hospital readmission."
