Man killed on pedestrian crossing in Poole

A man has died after he was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing in Dorset.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

A blue Nissan Micra knocked the 46-year-old man down close to the Branksome Railway Hotel, in Poole, in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said the man and his wife were on the pedestrian crossing with the green light and audio signal operating.

The car drove off after the incident but two members of the public followed it and detained a man until police arrived.

The injured man was taken to Poole General Hospital with serious head injuries where he died a short time later.

His 47-year-old wife was not injured.
