Investigation after Portland inmate found hanged

A man has been found hanged in his cell at a young offenders institution in Dorset.

Jordan Buckton, 20, of Bratton Fleming, north Devon, was found at HM Young Offenders Institute Portland early on Saturday.

A Prison Service spokesman said staff attempted resuscitation and paramedics attended, but he was pronounced dead just after 08:00 GMT.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate the death.

Self-harm risk

Mr Buckton was sentenced to four years in May 2011 after admitting unlawful wounding, racially abusing a doctor and causing actual bodily harm.

During his trial, Exeter Crown Court heard he was at risk of self-harm and on anti-psychotic medicine.

But HMYOI Portland says it does not cater for psychiatric issues among its 483 inmates.

Mr Buckton was the third young man in a week to die in a young offenders' institute in England.

Prison death charity INQUEST said: "We believe that the readiness of the courts to place young offenders in prison has terrifying results."

Since 1990, 244 young people aged under 21 have killed themselves in prison.
