Volunteers sought for Olympic torch relay

A Dorset council is looking for volunteers to help when the Olympic torch relay visits the county.

Borough of Poole is on the hunt for people to welcome visitors and help manage crowds at the relay on 13 July and other Olympic events in the town.

The first will be the Poole Festival of Running on 27 May. An Olympic legacy event is also planned on 18 August.

The one-day legacy sports festival in Poole Park aims to capitalise on the enthusiasm generated by the games.

The event will involve local sports and activity clubs.

The annual running festival, organised by Poole Runners club, includes a 10km and a 5km course as well as a series of 1-mile events for children at Poole Park.

The Olympic flame will be carried through more than 1,000 locations in the British Isles on its 70-day tour, including 47 in Dorset.

The torch relay will pass through Poole on day 55 of its journey around the UK.

Days 54 to 56 of the relay will take in Blandford, Dorchester, Bridport, Lyme Regis, Portland, Weymouth, Swanage, Wareham, Poole and Bournemouth and dozens of smaller towns and villages in between.

Prospective volunteers for the events should be over 18.
