Mice-infested Sailor's Return pub fined

The former owners of a Dorset pub infested with mice have been fined £6,000 for breaking food hygiene regulations.

Environmental health officers from Purbeck District Council inspected the Sailor's Return in East Chaldon in February after an anonymous tip off.

A council spokesman said: "Live and dead mice were observed along with vast amounts of droppings."

Pub Solutions South West Ltd pleaded guilty at Bournemouth Crown Court.

Katie Carr, 22, of Shirley Close, West Lulworth, who was temporary manager at the time, pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking food hygiene regulations.

She was fined £600 and ordered to pay £250 costs.

'Nest sites'

The company was also ordered to pay £3,000 in costs.

A council spokesman added: "The kitchen and bar area were found to be infested with mice.

"There was little regard for pest control in evidence."

Inspectors also discovered chewed through food packaging, "numerous nest sites" and dirty conditions where mice were "thriving".

The Sailor's Return was voluntarily closed so that it could be made safe. It is now run by new owners.
