Man burnt in explosion at fuel station demolition in Dorset

A man has suffered burns to his face and chest in an explosion at a former petrol station in a Dorset village.

The man was thought to have been working at the demolition site in Iwerne Minster, near Blandford, at about 15:20 GMT.

He was taken to Salisbury hospital with potentially life changing but not life threatening injuries, police said.

Properties within 100m were evacuated. Fire crews and a hazardous materials officer are in attendance.

Police, who are also on the scene, have closed a quarter mile section of the A350 in both directions.

Hazardous materials officer Dai Jones, of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The most important thing is to ensure that the fumes from a ruptured tank are fully dispersed and safe and to that end we have requested Dorset County Council to attend and take readings with petroleum gas monitors."
