New jobs planned for former Portland Olympic site

About 500 new jobs could be created on part of a former Olympic venue.

Plans to build six large industrial units on Hamm Beach Lane, Portland, have been approved by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

The Mere Tank Farm site was previously used for fuel storage and also formed part of the London 2012 sailing venue.

Final approval is subject to the developer, Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), paying £80,000 towards Portland Beach Road cycling and walking route.

It is thought 531 jobs could be created on completion of the buildings, which are expected to cover up to about 13,700 sq m (147,500 sq ft).

Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), which is next to the proposed site, hosted the Olympic sailing events last year.
