Man airlifted after Weymouth swimming accident

An 18-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital with suspected spinal injuries following an accident in the sea off Dorset.

Portland Coastguard officers were alerted by paramedics to a man injured in the water at Weymouth on Monday.

It is believed he hit a sandbank head-on while diving under an advancing wave while swimming at about 20:00 BST.

He was taken by coastguard helicopter to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.
