A freestyle motocross rider has jumped over Bournemouth Pier on a motorcycle.

Dan Whitby, from Norfolk, completed the stunt on Sunday on the second day of the Bournemouth Wheels Festival.

The jump had been due to take place on Saturday but rain and high winds forced the FMX display team to call it off.

The seafront and East Cliff were closed to traffic for the three-day festival, which also featured monster trucks, Dakar rally cars and BMX riders.

There was a display of Formula 1 and Le Mans cars on the East Cliff, including one previously driven by Ayrton Senna.

The weekend was not without its hitches. Displays by Dakar Rally cars had to be cancelled on Sunday afternoon after one rolled on the beach, smashing the windscreen, and the other suffered mechanical failure.

The monster truck show, which had already lost one of its vehicles due to a tyre problem, was also held up briefly while a lone swimmer who was watching from the water was moved along by stewards.

Thousands of people gathered on the pier, promenade and beach to watch the pier jump at 19:30 BST.

Mr Whitby, 30, who was a contestant on Britain's Got Talent, performed a test jump before repeating the stunt with a daring seat grab trick.

The free event was organised by Bournemouth Borough Council, which is hoping to build on the success of its annual Air Festival.
