Stricter rules controlling changes to a village of thatched cottages in a conservation area in Dorset have been introduced.

North Dorset District Council has introduced the restrictions for The Street, in Milton Abbas.

It means changes that can normally be made without planning permission, including the colour of exterior paint, will now need planning consent.

The council said the decision had been made in consultation with residents.

Councillor David Walsh said: "Milton Abbas is famous for its formal layout, similar design and colour of cottages and broad grass verges.

"It is these and other characteristics that the new guidelines seek to protect."
