About 650 homes are without gas in Poole after water leaked into a supply pipe.

Southern Gas Networks said a section of its pipe in Culliford Crescent, Canford Heath, had been flooded on Monday, after a water main burst.

The gas supplier said its engineers were on-site and had already removed 8,000 litres of water.

Wessex Water said the burst water main had now been fixed.

Southern Gas Networks has apologised and offered to supply electric hobs and heaters to those affected.

It has also set up a customer centre at St Paul's Church in Culliford Crescent.

Spokeswoman Chloe Boyce said 50 of its staff were involved in trying to restore gas supplies.

She said properties would be reconnected in phases, starting from Wednesday, but warned it could take until the end of the week to fix the problem.

She described it as a "difficult procedure" and said every property affected had already been visited, and had its gas supply turned off.
